services - Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is very common. The risk of ED increases with age and it effects nearly 10% of men under the age of 40 and 50% of men aged over 40. Erectile dysfunction can be due to a variety of problems including: one’s mental state, narrowing of arteries supplying the penis, dysfunction of the muscle within the penis involved in trapping blood and creating the erection, penile scarring or fibrosis as seen in Peyronies disease, neurological conditions or certain medications.
Does ED share common risk factors with cardiovascular disease?
It is important for men with erectile dysfunction to be evaluated by a healthcare professional to diagnose the cause and work towards effectively treating the ED. Many risk factors for erectile dysfunction such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia are also common risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Fortunately, many risk factors are modifiable for these conditions through lifestyle changes if identified early. Additionally, several studies to date have shown improvement in erectile function among men engaging in lifestyle modifications such as exercise, healthier diets and weight loss.
Many effective treatments are available for men with erectile dysfunction, including oral agents taken daily or when needed, penile injections, vacuum therapy and surgery with penile implants.
